What

Like I said in "why" , the reason for this website is to be a quick and dirty source for where to get started with artists when someone sees an abundance of releases and doesn't know where to get in. Each post is accompanied by a playlist on Spotify.  That playlist will include the stuff that I like from that artist, some of those things will be referenced in the accompanying post on this website.  Some won't.  I choose spotify because I love it as a consumer (I hate it as a musician, but that story has already been told elsewhere). Disclaimer I don't claim to be an authority.  I will make mistakes.  These posts are written in a stream of consciousness manner, and I will occasionally get something wrong.  Please post a comment and I will make corrections.  There is no need to be a dick about it.  I won't be a dick about, you won't be a dick about it. This is not intended to be a comprehensive writeup on these artists, you can go to wikipedia...

Bowie

If this is your first time visiting this website, check out the What and the Why .  Ok like I said in the first post ("Why") ,  I made a Spotify playlist for my friend. Here is is. You can put it on while you read this.  It's called "A very Bowie New Years" . All right here's the deal on where to start with Bowie. I think of Bowie records as 3 kind of major categories. 1.  The Mick Ronson guitar centric stuff, Ziggy era 2.  The arty Eno-ish sounding stuff, this is like the Berlin era stuff 3.  The funky shit These categories overlap.  I think.  Check the liner notes you lazy fuckers.  Don't expect me to do everything.  I am hungover and I am lazy too. Bowie brought androgony into the mainstream of rock music.  Without Bowie, I would argue, subjectively, you get no David Byrne.  I believe he was a saxophone player.  I am not sure what else he could play, most live stuff I know about has him on vocals only.   You...

Why

My friend at work asked me about Bowie.   He's a musician, and I was excited to have an opportunity to turn him on to the essential stuff. This is how this website started. I went into Spotify to make a playlist for him.  And there were all these records that have been released over the last 20 years or so which were the first ones listed.  And they were NOT the essential Bowie records.   So I realized that people who didn't grow up with some of this stuff, don't have a record store guy to ask about stuff, don't know where to start. Well buckle up mother fuckers because this is one thing I do know about.  It's been pretty useless in society up till now and probably will continue to be, but in the words of Pam Byrnes's brother in Meet the Parents, "Allow me to hook you up." Lil' Kim, she's phat, PH.
